Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 General Discussion Craig Gimble (co-leader) brought some new research to our attention today, including studies suggesting a possible causal relationship linking the onset of AS with IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) - click for details on news items 391 and 396 from SAA! An additional "heads up" was given that AS patients are at increased risk for periodontal disease (gum disease) - click here for more! We were also pleased to welcome new member, Allan!
Nutrition for the Ankylosing Spondylitis Patient We enjoyed a wonderful presentation by Natalie Vetrini, Nutritionist for the Madison Area YMCA. Among her interesting and important recommendations are the following: 1 - Keep a "food journal" where you write down what you ate and the time of day you ate it. This will allow you to determine specific foods that affect you! 2 - Eat "CLEAN" - meaning, eat whole and natural foods as much as possible! This is especially important for those of us taking medications - we need to protect the liver and maximize its functioning! "Flush" by drinking cranberry juice (look for Just Cranberry concentrate) and, of course, lots of water! (TIP- If you drink something else, like a cup of coffee, also drink an equal amount of water!) Flax seed oil is also a good "cleanser!" 3 - Eat 6-8 small "snacks" every 2-3 hours instead of eating 3 large meals per day! Combine protein and carbs for these snacks, i.e., eat almond butter with a banana, pretzels with walnuts, cheese with an apple! Be conscious of portion sizes! 4 - Eat a VARIETY of foods that make you feel good! Supplements of folic acid, calcium and vitamin D have been shown to be important for AS patients!
